Factors of incontinence

Posted by Raymond on 11/22/2013
Incontinence is thought to affect over 25 million Americans. This widely overlooked problem is often ignored as people don't like to talk about it. It's often thought that only old people can suffer from incontinence. This is not true, as incontinence can affect people of all ages. Many people think that this form of leakage is normal. This is not the case. While incontinence is not a serious condition, it is still worth seeing a doctor about if there's a serious problem. Women often associate the leakage with their menstrual cycle and thus pass it off as being normal. The downplaying of the issue often goes undressed, with men and women both assuming that a certain amount of leakage is just part of life.

Aging is a factor in many conditions, including incontinence. One of the biggest issues with incontinence is that it is thought that it is natural with aging. One of the interesting things about incontinence is that it's actually in many ways psychological. The psychological factors of the condition are often ignored by doctors. Just as the sound of running water can encourage anyone to urinate, someone with incontinence may experience that urge and have leakage. It's often thought that drinking less can stop incontinence. This is typically not true, though in rare cases it can be a factor. Some doctors think that drinking more small amounts of water throughout the day can help to combat incontinence. Caffeinated beverages, such as coffee often act as a diuretic that exacerbate incontinence.

It's often believed that man don't or rarely experience incontinence, but this is a myth. About 1/4th of the Americans with incontinence are male. Leakage through the male urethra can be due to a number of different causes, including enlarged prostate. Incontinence is not a disease, it's a condition. While it isn't life threatening, it can lead to a lot of unhappiness and depression, which can naturally contribute to less of a desire to live life.

There's not really any general cure for incontinence. However, there are preventative measures that people can take to ensure that it doesn't happen in the future. It is a good idea not to take in an excess of liquids. Many people believe that an individual should drink eight or more glasses of water a day. It is a better idea for incontinence sufferers to only drink when they feel thirsty.
