Adult Diapers:  Preventing Rash

Prevention is always the first line of defense in matters of health and maintaining good skin health is a major concern for the adult diapers patient.   The maintenance regime is really very simple in practice but requires diligence:

  • Buy the best size of adult diapers for the patient; the size that gives the snuggest fit without being too tight.   Unnecessary wrinkles in the material can chafe and cause skin to break down.
  • Remove a wet or soiled diaper as soon as possible.   A regular changing schedule of every three hours, or more frequently if required, can help the caregiver stay on top of this situation.
  • Disposable adult diapers are preferable to cloth in preventing diaper dermatitis.   Contrary to some popular notions, cloth diapers can exacerbate skin deterioration.   Disposable adult diapers are designed to wick moisture away from the patient's skin which cloth is unable to do.   The plastic pants that cloth diapers require also produce a hot house effect on a wet diaper, increasing skin irritation and speeding bacteria development.
  • Thoroughly clean all skin in the diaper area with hypoallergenic wipes or clean cloth.   Pat or air dry the diaper zone before putting on a fresh diaper.
  • Create a moisture barrier to the freshly cleaned skin by applying a thin layer of zinc oxide or petroleum jelly.
  • If applying powder, never supplement with cornstarch which could encourage the rapid spread of a yeast infection.
